Update (28 Jan 07):

We now recommend the National Weather Service Ridge/Radar KML service for real-time warning and radar overlays for Google Earth. You can select from a wide variety of regions and overlay types using a simple menu. If you’d like a simple overlay of radar and warning data for the entire US, we have combined links to the NWS National Radar picture and NWS Warnings with our own airport weather layer.

Original Post:

The National Severe Storms Laboratry has posted a neat set of experimental weather maps using Google Earth.

You can download the full list HERE.

We particularly recommend the CONUS Radar Reflectivity (Composite) and Satellite imagery files. The CONUS Radar map divides the US into six regions - any of which can be selected for viewing. The radar maps will automatically update every 2 minutes. As of 27 Jan 06, the NSSL website seems to be having some problems with the Google Earth files. We will update this post when we have more information.

Friday evening was one of those great times to be on the water - pretty skies, a quiet anchorage, and good company. We knew there was a slight chance of scattered showers during the night, but nothing like the wind storm and drenching we were due to receive. Click on the radar image to play the movie. You’ll need Apple Quicktime to it play it.

Albany Yacht Club Runaway Dock - It Doesn’t Take a Hurricane to Ruin Your Day

Monday, July 3rd, 2006

Proof that it doesn’t take a hurricane to ruin a lot of boats.

From CBS Channel 6 in Albany, New York:

Just before noon on Thursday, the club’s dock, on the Hudson River, broke free and drifted downstream in the fast-moving waters of the Hudson River. Attached to the dock: millions of dollars in luxury yachts. Crews are frantically working right now to capture the yachts as the float freely down the river. A gas pump attached to the dock also broke free. “

Read the full story and see the video of the loaded dock floating downriver HERE.
