Close-up of Gimbal Ring Attach Point and Upper Swivel Pin

The gimbal ring is held on the upper swivel pin via u-bolt. The facing nuts tension this u-bolt for proper engagement. They should be torqued to mercruiser specifications (but not over-torqued). Corrosion in the upper swivel pin / steering arm interface inside the transom assembly is a common cause loose steering.
